Etymology

From (うわ) (uwa-, the ()(ふく)(けい) (hifukukei, bound form) of (うえ) (ue, up; top)) + () (-gi, clothes; wear, from the (れん)(よう)(けい) (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of the verb () (kiru, to wear)). The ki changes to gi as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
