Etymology

From 上(うわ) (uwa-, the 被(ひ)覆(ふく)形(けい) (hifukukei, “bound form”) of 上(うえ) (ue, “up; top”)) + 着(ぎ) (-gi, “clothes; wear”, from the 連(れん)用(よう)形(けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 着(き)る (kiru, “to wear”)). The ki changes to gi as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
