Compound of 異 (koto, “different, separate”) +‎ 天 (ama, “heaven”, ancient compounding reading) +‎ つ (tsu, ancient possessive particle) +‎ 神 (kami, “god, spirit”).

The use of 別 to spell koto is an example of semantic jukujikun (熟字訓). The use of 津 to spell the particle tsu is an example of phonetic ateji (当て字).
