From 月 (tuku, combining form of tuki2, “moon”) + 讀み (yo2mi1, “counting”, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of verb 讀む (yo2mu), “to count”), and referred to telling the moonphases.[1][2]
