Etymology
Superficially of 烏帽子 (eboshi, “priest's cap”) + がら, but the origin of the latter portion is uncertain. Compare etymology at 山雀 (yamagara, “varied tit”). Compare also 小雀 (kogara, “willow tit”), 四十雀 (shijūkara, “Japanese tit”).
Noun
烏帽子雀 or 烏帽子雀 • (eboshigara)
Usage notes
As with many terms that name organisms, this term is often spelled in katakana, especially in biological contexts (where katakana is customary).
