Attested in the Erya (爾雅 (Ěryǎ)), 3rd c. BCE.

Etymology

From Old Japanese; first attested in a mokkan excavated from the Former Naniwa Palace, 652 - 686, as man'yōgana form 伊加比 <igapi₁>, apparently a half-calque of Middle Chinese 貽貝 (jɨ pɑi^H) with 貝(かい) (kai, “shell”). Some theories that describe the former part 貽(い) (i) as 異(い) (i, “different”) or 否(いな) (ina, “no”) in a sense of "different or uncommon type of shells" seem folk etymology.
