Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *an (β€œso, then, well; whether”), from Proto-Indo-European *hβ‚‚en (β€œthere, on the other hand”). Cognate with Old English ono (β€œif, well, then, now”). Compare also Old High German inu, ino (β€œwell, yea, though, because, if, for example”), Old Saxon inu (β€œwell, yea, because, namely”), Old English eno (β€œif, well, then, now”).
