From Proto-Germanic *an (βso, then, well; whetherβ), from Proto-Indo-European *hβen (βthere, on the other handβ). Cognate with Old English ono (βif, well, then, nowβ). Compare also Old High German inu, ino (βwell, yea, though, because, if, for exampleβ), Old Saxon inu (βwell, yea, because, namelyβ), Old English eno (βif, well, then, nowβ).
