Inherited from Proto-Slavic *ętì (“to take”), reanalyzed as нѧти (nęti) in verbs сънѧти (sŭnęti) and вънѧти (vŭnęti) prefixed with сън- (sŭn-), вън- (vŭn-) (сън-ѧти → съ-нѧти, вън-ѧти → въ-нѧти). Cognate with Old East Slavic -нѧти (-nęti), Russian -ня́ть (-njátʹ), Old Ruthenian -нѧ́ти (-njáti), Ukrainian -ня́ти (-njáty), Belarusian -ня́ць (-njácʹ).
