Etymology

From Proto-Turkic *sen, which was a postposition. The -ң ending was added by analogue with second person possessive ending -ің (-ıñ). Cognate with Kyrgyz -син (-sin), Southern Altai -сиҥ (-siŋ) / -зиҥ (-ziŋ), Turkish -sin.

Suffix

-сің • (-sıñ)

  1. are (denotes "to be" for second person singular informal when at the end of an object)
    ‎қазақ (qazaq, “a Kazakh”) + ‎-сің (-sıñ) → ‎қазақсың (qazaqsyñ, “You are a Kazakh”)
