Pronunciation

Etymology 1

Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *-yéti (denominative suffix).

    Suffix

    -यति • (-yáti)

    1. forms denominative verbs
      शिथिल (śithila, loose) + ‎-यति (-yati) → ‎शिथिलयति (śithilayati, makes loose)
      चोर (cora, thief) + ‎-यति (-yati) → ‎चोरयति (corayati, steals)
    Usage notes

While the Vedic accent is generally on the suffix, it can also shift to previous syllable: for example अर्थयति (artháyati) from अर्थ (ártha), coinciding formally with a causative and traditionally interpreted as a class 10 verb (अर्थ् (arth) + -अयति (-áyati)).
