Borrowed from Ancient Greek ἀήθης (aḗthēs, “strange, unusual”). Further from ἦθος (êthos), ἔθος (éthos, “one's nature or character”), ἔθω (éthō, “to be accustomed to, to tend to”), Proto-Indo-European *swe-dʰh₁- (“one's character”), *swé (“self”, reflexive pronoun).
Coined by Swedish naturalist Gustaf Johan Billberg in 1820.
