Borrowed from Ancient Greek ἀήθης (aḗthēs, strange, unusual). Further from ἦθος (êthos), ἔθος (éthos, one's nature or character), ἔθω (éthō, to be accustomed to, to tend to), Proto-Indo-European *swe-dʰh₁- (one's character), *swé (self, reflexive pronoun).

Coined by Swedish naturalist Gustaf Johan Billberg in 1820.
