First attested as ackrom in 1315. Borrowed from West Frisian Akkrum, of unknown etymology. Potentially derived from Old Frisian ake (“fish weir”). Various proposed compounds of a personal name or oikonym and hēm (“home, settlement”) do not match the oldest attestations of the toponym.
