Learned borrowing from Medieval Latin Alsatia, from Old High German ali sazzo (“inhabitant of the other”) (referring to the opposite bank of the Rhine), from Proto-Germanic *aljaz (“other”) + *sitjaną (“inhabitant”, literally “sitter”).
