Borrowed via Dutch ansjovis from Spanish anchovas, anchoas, plural of anchova, anchoa (“anchovy”), which is from Ligurian anciôa, through Vulgar Latin *apiuva from Latin aphyē, Ancient Greek ἀφύη (aphúē, “small fry”).
