By surface analysis, a- (negationary prefix; from Ancient Greek ἀ- (a-)) + Ancient Greek στόμᾰ (stómă, “mouth”) + -ella (diminutive suffix).
- (fly genus): Coined by French zoologist and entomologist Pierre André Latreille in 1809.
- (fungus genus): Coined by Indian phytopathologist, mycologist and microbiologist Mandayam Jeersannidhi Thirumalachar in 1947.
