From Middle High German balz, also balzer (“courtship, mop of hair, ponytail”), attested from the 14th century onwards. Compare Middle High German balzieren (“to tie one's hair into a ponytail”). Further etymology unknown. Possibly linked to Proto-Germanic *baltijaz.
