From Middle High German balz, also balzer (courtship, mop of hair, ponytail), attested from the 14th century onwards. Compare Middle High German balzieren (to tie one's hair into a ponytail). Further etymology unknown. Possibly linked to Proto-Germanic *baltijaz.
