Bernheze

1. A municipality of North Brabant, Netherlands.

Derived from a compound of Middle Dutch bern (“source, spring”) and Middle Dutch hese (“brushwood”) (see Old Dutch *hēsi). Originally the name of a hamlet. The hamlet was gifted to the monks of the abbey of Bern near Zaltbommel in 1196. An abbey of the same name would later be founded in Heeswijk-Dinther in 1857.
