First attested as brontegum in the 13th century. Borrowed from West Frisian Brantgum, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian Brant (a personal name) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi- and hem (“home, settlement”). Compare Mantgum and Tjeintgum.
