Etymology

First attested as mantingum in the 13th century. Borrowed from West Frisian Mantgum, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian Mante (a personal name) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi- and hēm (“home, settlement”). Compare Brantgum, Mantinge and Tjeintgum.
