Etymology

First attested as goingum in the 13th century. Borrowed from West Frisian Goaiïngea, derived in turn from the dative plural form of Old Frisian Goinga (a surname) or, alternatively, a compound of Goinga and hēm (home, settlement). The element ga (village, village area) is a later addition.
