Etymology

Borrowed from Ancient Greek ὑδραίνω (hudraínō, to sprinkle, to pour). Further from ῠ̔́δωρ (hŭ́dōr, water, rain), Proto-Hellenic *údōr (water), Proto-Indo-European *wódr̥ (water, noun) and Proto-Indo-European *wed- (water, root).

Coined by German entomologist Johann Gottlieb Kugelann in 1794.

    Pronunciation

    • English: (US) IPA(key): /haɪˈdɹeɪ.nə/

    Derived terms

    • Note: List may be incomplete. There is much etymological entanglement when it comes to genera of the Hydraenidae. Many names come from Hydraena, but many of those are blends, not affixes or compounds, making it far more difficult to accurately trace their etymologies, as also many derive from other terms subsequently derived from Hydraena.
