From Old Norse Jamtaland, from jamti (“Jamt”) + land (“land”).
Folk etymology
According to the saga of Haakon the Good, named after Ketill jamti, the legendary first settler of this landscape. Cognate with Icelandic Jamtaland, Swedish Jämtland and Danish Jemtland.
Another false etymology version derives the name from jamt (the neutrum of jamn, see also Swedish jämn).
