From Ancient Greek λεπτόν (leptón, a small coin; a lepton) +‎ -ia. False cognate with Greek λεπτόνια n pl (leptónia, leptons (physics)), though both share the same root word of Ancient Greek λεπτός (leptós, small; thin, lean).
