From Ancient Greek λεπτόν (leptón, “a small coin; a lepton”) + -ia. False cognate with Greek λεπτόνια n pl (leptónia, “leptons (physics)”), though both share the same root word of Ancient Greek λεπτός (leptós, “small; thin, lean”).
