Borrowed from Punjabi ਮੁਲਤਾਨ / ملتان (multān), from Saraiki ملتان (multān), further etymology is disputed. There are multiple interpretations of this name's origin:

  • From Sanskrit मुलस्थान (mulasthāna), from मुल (mula, “a Sun deity or an ancient tribe”).[1] [2]
  • From Old Persian mulastāna (“frontier land”). [3]
