First attested as Oester Nyegae in 1505. Borrowed from West Frisian Ousternijegea, derived from the toponym Ouwer (derived in turn from Old Frisian ower (“bank, strip of land next to a watercourse”)) and a compound of nī (“new”) and gâ (“village, village area”).
