  1. (obsolete, historical) A taxonomic kingdom within the domain Eukaryota – a diverse group of organisms comprising 45 phyla; they are mostly single cellular, and include some algae, the Protozoa, the slime moulds and the water moulds.

Usage notes

  • In modern classifications, Protista is obsolete, due to it being a paraphyletic group.
