Etymology 2

From Middle High German rūte. Probably the same word as etymology 1, the name of the shape being taken from the plant's cross-shaped flower, which is reminiscent of a rhombus. (Compare the picture above.) This etymology is now predominantly accepted, though some sources still consider it uncertain.

Sense 4 is in reference to the team's diamond-shaped logo.
