From Proto-Indo-European *ǵemH-t-os (“son-in-law”), from *ǵemH- (“to form a relationship; to marry”), or else from *ǵénh₁-to-s (“relative”), from *ǵenh₁- (“to give birth”) (the two roots appear to have been confused within Balto-Slavic).
