Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *lúHḱ-is, from *lewḱ-, from *lewk- (bright; to shine). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *luhsaz m, *luhǭ f,[1] Proto-Hellenic *lúnks, from which Ancient Greek λύγξ (lúnx), Armenian լուսան (lusan).
