Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *h₂(w)lop-ḱ-eh₂, from *h₂(w)lṓp- (lengthened o-grade via schwebeablaut), from *h₂wl̥p- (fox, zero-grade). Due to the taboo nature of the word, the root has changed significantly in most Indo-European descendants.
