Proto-Balto-Slavic
Etymology
Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wl̥p-iḱ-yós[1][2] (with a variation of suffix *-ḱos), from *h₂wl̥p- (zero-grade), variant of *h₂(w)lṓp- (“fox”, lengthened o-grade via schwebeablaut). Due to the taboo nature of the word, the root has changed significantly in most Indo-European descendants.
