Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *skowy-ós (metathesized schwebeablaut of zero-grade), from *skwey- (needle, prickle, thorn). Doublet of *skwajás. Cognate with Proto-Albanian *skuja and its derivative *skuna, from which Albanian hu (stake, pole; penis), *skuntā, from which Albanian hundë (nose).
