Uncertain. According to Aikio (2009), borrowed from Proto-Samic *puornë.[1] Metsäranta (2024) instead suggests that both the Samic and Finnic words might have been borrowed independently from an unknown third source, perhaps by metathesis from Proto-Germanic *brunnô.[2]
