Probably from a Proto-Indo-European *bʰḗlH-o-m, from *bʰel- (shiny; bright; gleaming; white).[1] Cognate with Proto-Slavic *bělъ (white), Lithuanian bãlas, báltas (white), Latvian balts (white), Ancient Greek φαλός (phalós, white), Sanskrit भाल (bhāla, splendour).
