From Proto-Indo-European *dolH-o-, from the root *delH- (“to reckon, calculate”). Compare *talō, *talkōną, Ancient Greek δόλος (dólos, “trick(ery), deceit; bait”), Hittite talliije/azi (“to pray to, evoke (a deity)”), and Old Armenian տող (toł, “line, row”).
