From Proto-Indo-European *wérǵʰ-e-, from *werǵʰ- (to bind, squeeze). Cognate with Lithuanian ver̃žti (to tighten, string), Proto-Slavic *povorzъ (cord, rope),[1] as well as perhaps Albanian vjerdh (to instill, bring close), Latin urgeō (to press, push).
