From Proto-Indo-European *wérǵʰ-e-, from *werǵʰ- (“to bind, squeeze”). Cognate with Lithuanian ver̃žti (“to tighten, string”), Proto-Slavic *povorzъ (“cord, rope”),[1] as well as perhaps Albanian vjerdh (“to instill, bring close”), Latin urgeō (“to press, push”).
