From Proto-Indo-European *HéHḱus, *h₁oHḱ-ú-s, perhaps related to *h₁éḱwos (“horse”). Cognate with Ancient Greek ὠκύς (ōkús, “fast, swift”), Latin ōcior (“swifter”).[1][2]
