From Proto-Indo-European *HéHḱus, *h₁oHḱ-ú-s, perhaps related to *h₁éḱwos (horse). Cognate with Ancient Greek ὠκύς (ōkús, fast, swift), Latin ōcior (swifter).[1][2]
