Etymology
Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *h₂lewpéh₂-ḱo-s (“fox-like”), from *h₂lewpéh₂-s ~ *h₂lewph₂-és (“fox”) + *-ḱos, from *h₂lewp- (“fox”). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἀλώπηξ (alṓpēx), Proto-Italic *wolpis, Lithuanian lãpė, Latvian lapsa, Old Armenian աղուէս (ałuēs), Luwian [script needed] (ulipna-), [script needed] (walipna-).
