Proto-Sino-Tibetan

Reconstruction

  • Proto-Sino-Tibetan: ?
    • Proto-Tibeto-Burman: *ʔa (STEDT)

A rare alternative numeral "one" with peculiar distributions in every subfamily it is attested in.

  • The Southern Muji form is highly isolated within Lolo-Burmese, being the only word for "one" in all of Lolo-Burmese to not begin with a coronal consonant (that characterizes descendants of *kV-tek)
  • In Rma, a reflex of *ʔa is used for the number "one" proper but 11, 21, 31, etc. are formed with *kV-tek.
  • In West rGyalrongic, the reflexes of *ʔa are used instead of *kV-tek whenever a classifier is needed.
