Proto-Sino-Tibetan

Prefix

*N-

  1. anticausative prefix; forms intransitive verbs from transitive verbs.

Reconstruction notes

  • Do not confuse this prefix with *ŋə-, which, after pre-initial reduction, became confused with the anticausative outside of rGyalrongic.
  • In East rGyalrongic, this prefix surfaces as prenasalization of the following consonant (lemmatized as n- in the following descendants list).
  • This prefix suffered complete transphonologization outside of East rGyalrongic and Old Chinese. It usually left its mark on verb pairs where the intransitive counterpart begins with a voiced consonant and the transitive counterpart has an unvoiced consonant (the exact articulation of the consonants may change due to secondary shifts).
