Etymology
Uncertain. Multiple etymologies have been proposed:
- from *sъ(n)- + *ǫxati (or *vъ(n)- + *ǫxati) by rebracketing, with secondary change n > ň
- related to Proto-Germanic *niuhsijaną
- related to Proto-Germanic *hneusaną and German Nüster (considered improbable by Vasmer)
