Etymology

Likely a collective form of Proto-Indo-European *gʰréwdos (crude, great), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰer- (to grind, to rub). Cognates include Latvian graûds (grain), Lithuanian grūdai (grain), Proto-Germanic *grautaz (big, great).[1]
