Proto-Slavic

Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *kʷom-dʰ-; the first component *kʷom- is from *kʷós (what), while the second part *-dʰ- is of unclear interpretation and function. Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *kʷom-do-, from *kʷom- (what) + *do (to), in which case cognate with Old Latin cunde (whence). Baltic cognates include Old Prussian quendau (= kendau) in isquendau ("from where, whence"), from is "from" (cf. Lithuanian , Latvian iz, Proto-Slavic *jьz) + kendau.[1]

Adverb

*kǫda[1]

  1. where, whither
