Etymology

From *sojь (“shaded; blue”) +‎ *-а, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *śájas, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ḱéh₃-yo-s, from *(s)ḱeh₃- (“shadow”) +‎ *-yós, cognate with Proto-Celtic *skātos (“shadow”), Proto-Germanic *hēwijaz (“dark blue”). Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ḱeh₁y- (“to shine, shimmer”)^[1].^[2]
