From Proto-Balto-Slavic *stōˀmas, from Proto-Indo-European *stoh₂-mo-s, from *steh₂- (to stand).

Cognate with Lithuanian stúomas (stature, figure, trunk, piece of linen for a shirt), Ancient Greek στώμιξ (stṓmix, piece of wood).
