Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *śwaitas, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱweyt- (to shine). Cognate with Lithuanian šviẽsti (to shine), Sanskrit श्वेत (śvetá, white, bright), Proto-Germanic *hwītaz (white). Doublet of *květъ.[1]
