Proto-Slavic

Etymology

According to R. Matasović,[1] from Proto-Indo-European *(s)teg- (to cover) + *-mn̥, with eventual loss of pre-Slavic *g before *m. Vasmer and Snoj allude a possible relation to Proto-Slavic *tęti (to chop) from Proto-Indo-European *temh₁-, however, such a derivation is semantically dubious and does not explain the long *-ě-. Sometimes also compared to Ancient Greek σῶμα (sôma, body) of uncertain origin (probably from Proto-Indo-European *tweH- (to swell), akin to Proto-Slavic *tylъ (back of the neck)).
