Proto-Slavic
Etymology
Derived from the present stem of an earlier *verzti. Probably continuing Proto-Indo-European *wr̥ǵʰyéti (“to tighten”), from Proto-Indo-European *werǵʰ-. Cognate with Proto-Germanic *wurgijaną (“to strangle”) and akin to Lithuanian ver̃žti (“to string”).
