Etymology

    Uncertain. Nikulin proposes a derivation from Proto-Tupian *ŋkʷat with an unexplained *-at͡ʃɨ suffix,[1] while Navarro hypothesizes a compound of kó (“this”) +‎ 'ara (“day”) +‎ sy (“origin”) (*ko +‎ *ʔar +‎ *t͡ʃɨ) for the Old Tupi descendant.[2]
