Etymology

    Uncertain. Nikulin proposes a derivation from Proto-Tupian *ŋkʷat with an unexplained *-at͡ʃɨ suffix,[1] while Navarro hypothesizes a compound of (this) +‎ 'ara (day) +‎ sy (origin) (*ko +‎ *ʔar +‎ *t͡ʃɨ) for the Old Tupi descendant.[2]
