Etymology

    Inherited from Proto-Tupi-Guarani *kʷarat͡ʃɨ, possibly from Proto-Tupian *ŋkʷat. Navarro hypothesizes a compound kó (“this”) +‎ 'ara (“day”) +‎ sy (“mother”), literally “the mother, origin of this day”, but the term is present in other Tupi-Guarani languages.

    Cognate with Paraguayan Guaraní kuarahy.
