Etymology

From *ur- (“to hit; to place”) +‎ *-gan. Cognate with *uruk (“rope”). According to Clauson, unrelated to *ȫrk and *ȫrken which are instead from *ȫr- (“to plait”). Relation to *arkan (“rope”) is uncertain.
